Newsha Tavakolian is a renowned Iranian photojournalist and documentary photographer who was born in 1981 in Tehran. She started her career as a professional photographer at the age of 16, working for various Iranian newspapers that were later banned by the government. She has covered many important events in Iran and the Middle East, such as the 1999 student uprising, the Iraq war, the Arab Spring, and the Syrian conflict. She has also worked for international media outlets such as Time magazine, The New York Times, Le Figaro, and National Geographic. Her work focuses on women's issues, social documentary, and art. She is a co-founder of Rawiya, a women's photography collective, and a full member of Magnum Photos. She has won several awards for her photography, including the Prince Claus Award in 2015 and the Carmignac Photojournalism Award in 2014. She is married to Thomas Erdbrink, a Dutch journalist and former Tehran bureau chief for The New York Times.
